Subway is no competition for McDonald's

Subway is no competition for McDonald’s.

Subway has increased their number of stores throughout the UK; there are now seven Subways just in Preston alone.

Manager of McDonalds on the retail park, Deepdale, is Vicky Townsend. Her opinion on this is “let’s just put a subway on every street, instead of increasing sales in one branch, let’s build another”.

On the retail park at Deepdale, there used to be only McDonald’s and a restaurant. Now, there is a Subway, KFC and Gregg’s all next to McDonalds.

Vicky doesn’t think they are in any competition with Subway and says, “Gregg’s is more of a threat”.

McDonalds is the only restaurant with a drive through, so recently they have had a refurbishment, which they have, improved their biggest asset. This is to also keep to the label ‘fast food’ by increasing the speed of the drive through.

Subway is no competition for McDonalds says the manager, the sales are trending at a 10% increase, and they only declined for the first month of Subway opening.

McDonalds also offers a wide range of healthy options, so they haven’t lost their customers due to wanting to eat healthier. They do salads, deli sandwiches, fruit, and they don’t charge extra for having them toasted or extra cheese.

Vicky says, “They might have more stores but McDonalds is more recognised, a bigger brand name”.

The company are attracting customers by vouchers on bus tickets, and an offer of £9.99 which includes; 2 x chicken sandwich or 2 x fish fillet, 3 x nuggets or 3 x fish fingers, 5 x medium fries, and 5 x medium soft drinks. They have done this because of the Asian community it’s based in; they consider their locals and have added fish into the offer.

Subway takes over McDonald's store count

Subway chain now has more stores in Preston than McDonalds.

Subway’s located in Preston are, one on Fylde Road next to the University; three in the town centre itself, one in Bamber Bridge, one in Longridge and one on Deepdale Retail Park, that’s seven stores in one area of Lancashire.

There used to be only one subway in Preston city centre once upon a time. Now there are doubles of every fast food chain. The centre is flooded with choice but what do we prefer, McDonalds or Subway?

Russell Whalley from Brookfield Preston, says, “I’d rather eat subway, because it tastes better”.

Katrina from Leyland says, “I like Subway because its healthier, I just prefer it. I like how you can see them make them. There’s lots of choice you can choose different bread and filling each time, its just yummy”.

Colin Boden from Blackpool says, “McDonalds because I prefer the food”.

Ray usher from Blackburn says, “McDonalds, because I am a fussy eater, and subway doesn’t have anything on the menu that id like”.

McDonalds manager Vicky Townsend, on Deepdale Retail Park says that “our deli range is healthier than a Subway sub, and we don’t charge for extra cheese or to have it toasted”.

Subway is worldwide with over 30,000 stores open in 87 different countries. There were only 25 subway stores in the year 2000, and the plans are to open 650 stores by 2010. These expansions of stores have created many jobs throughout the region, and plans to create many more.

Healthy school dinners

I have just come across an audio piece about school dinners in a north west primary school. I at first thought changing school dinners is the right thing to do but we all loved our chips and burgers. Now after listening to this, its a great reflection on how Jamie has changed the nations healthy diets. Have a listen on the LEP's website.

Banning Junk Food

According to experts, the NHS should follow schools and ban sugary drinks and snacks from hospitals and GP surgeries. The British Dental Health Foundation are calling to fill the vending machine with juices and healthy snacks instead of bottles of coke and chocolate. The NHS should lead by example and follow the 'healthy food' in the UK. Story follows on the BBC website.
